Valin goes on his first Jedi mission when he's a week past fifteen years old.
It's not an official Jedi mission, of course. They don't even carry their lightsabers -- not on their belts, at least. It’s still too dangerous to be a Jedi in public, particularly a young Jedi with famous parents, a Jedi with a name that the average person pays attention to.
("Hey," says everyone who ever meets Valin Horn, "you any relation to that Corran Horn? The Ithor guy?")
Being a Jedi is, quite simply, problematic.
Most of the galaxy still thinks Anakin Solo is dead, too, and even the Jedi want to keep it that way for a while longer. Anakin's the holdout blaster, their last shot. It’s too early for their last shot.
But Anakin’s been fully healed for months and driving everyone crazy with requests to leave Eclipse. He’s been training the kids, sure, helping a lot - but like he told Kam with Valin right there in the room: what’s the point of training you never use?
Kam doesn’t entirely agree with that sentiment, Valin knows the old Master well enough to sense that, but at least he and Tionne finally relent a little. Eclipse needs supplies, a few species-specific things that Peckhum can't find these days, and Anakin’s space-crazy enough to take what excuse he can get to leave the Maw. So the eighteen-year-old leaves with a shuttle, a few gems and trinkets (more reliable than New Republic credit), and explicit instructions to return within a week. Anakin agrees.
And just doesn't tell Kam that Valin’s hitching a ride.
